As dogs age, their bodies go through many of the same changes we see in people. Stiff joints, reduced mobility, muscle tension, and general discomfort can slowly become part of daily life. In my experience, remedial canine massage is one of the most effective and gentle ways to support senior dogs, helping them stay comfortable, mobile, and relaxed as they grow older.
Remedial massage focuses on muscles, soft tissues, and movement patterns. We often see senior dogs develop compensatory tension as they adjust how they move to avoid pain. Massage helps improve blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tired or tight muscles, while also supporting lymphatic drainage to reduce inflammation and fluid build-up.
Beyond the physical benefits, massage has a noticeable calming effect. Many older dogs experience anxiety or restlessness, especially when they are living with ongoing discomfort. Through gentle, purposeful touch, massage stimulates the release of endorphins, helping dogs feel more settled and at ease during and after sessions.
Regular remedial massage can also support joint flexibility and range of motion. While it does not cure arthritis, we often see dogs move more freely and comfortably when massage is part of their ongoing care plan. Simple movements such as standing up, walking, or lying down can become less effortful over time.
Just as importantly, massage provides focused one-on-one time. For senior dogs, this calm and supportive interaction can improve confidence, comfort, and overall quality of life.
